Almost every painting quote comes down to labour hours, materials, and access. The bigger the surface area and the worse the condition, the more hours the job takes.
- Total surface area, including ceilings and trims if they are in scope
- Condition of the existing surfaces and how much repair, filling and sanding is needed
- Number of coats required, especially for big colour changes
- Quality of paint and primer specified
- Access, such as second storeys, steep sites or scaffolding
- Detail work like ornate trims, cabinetry, feature walls and multiple colours
Why quotes differ so much
Two quotes for the same house can be thousands apart because they cover different work. One might include full preparation, priming, and two topcoats of premium paint. Another might be one coat over a quick sand with a budget product.
Ask every painter what preparation is included, how many coats are quoted, which paint product and finish will be used, and whether trims, ceilings and doors are in or out. Once the scope matches, the comparison becomes fair.
How to keep costs down without cutting corners
Stage the work across rooms or across seasons rather than dropping the specification. Clear rooms and move furniture yourself before we arrive. Repaint before the old coating fails badly, since peeling and rotted timber add preparation hours. Sticking close to your existing colour can also reduce the number of coats needed.
