How to Choose the Right Paint Colour for Your Home
Choosing paint colours can be overwhelming. Here are our top tips for selecting shades that work with your space, lighting, and style.
Picking a paint colour is one of the most exciting (and most stressful) parts of any home project. With thousands of shades to choose from, even a small room can feel like a big decision. After painting hundreds of homes around Bacchus Marsh and the Macedon Ranges, we've put together the advice we give every client.
Start with the light in your room
Natural light changes the way a colour reads on your wall. North-facing rooms get warm light and make most whites feel creamy. South-facing rooms get cooler light, which can flatten warmer tones. Always test your top colours on at least two walls and look at them in the morning, midday, and at night under your normal lighting.
Pick a tone before you pick a colour
Decide whether you want the space to feel warm, cool, or neutral before you start narrowing down swatches. Warm whites and earthy tones suit family homes and country-style interiors. Cool greys and crisp whites suit modern, minimal spaces. Locking in the tone first makes the rest of the choice much easier.
Consider your fixed elements
Floors, benchtops, tiles, and large furniture aren't changing any time soon. Pull your colour palette from those fixed elements rather than fighting them. A timber floor with warm undertones, for example, will clash with a cool blue-grey wall but sing with a soft warm white.
Test, test, test
Sample pots are the cheapest insurance you can buy. Paint A4-sized swatches (or larger) and live with them for a few days before committing. If you'd like a hand narrowing it down, we offer colour consultations as part of every interior quote.
