5 Tips to Keep Your Deck Looking Brand New
Your deck is an investment. Here's how to maintain it between professional refurbishments to extend its life and beauty.
A timber deck is one of the best additions you can make to a home, but Australian sun, rain, and frost are tough on it. With a bit of regular care between professional refurbishments, you can keep your deck looking great for decades.
1. Sweep and rinse regularly
Leaves, dirt, and debris trap moisture against the timber and accelerate weathering. A quick sweep every week or two and a hose-down once a month makes a huge difference, especially around planters and shaded corners.
2. Clean with the right products
Avoid harsh bleach-based cleaners on timber. A dedicated deck cleaner once or twice a year lifts grime, mould, and tannin staining without damaging the finish underneath.
3. Watch for grey patches
Grey, dry, or fluffy looking timber is the first sign that the protective oil or stain has worn through. Catching this early means a simple recoat instead of a full sand-back later.
4. Recoat before it fails
Most decking oils need a refresh every 12 to 24 months in our climate. A light clean, scuff sand, and fresh top-up coat is far cheaper than letting the timber fully strip back and starting again.
5. Book a professional refurb every few years
Every three to five years, your deck will benefit from a proper sand back, repair, and recoat. We can assess your deck and recommend the right product for the level of traffic and exposure it gets.
