Why Preparation is Key to a Great Exterior Paint Job
A quality exterior finish starts long before the first coat of paint. Learn why preparation makes all the difference.
If there's one thing that separates a paint job that lasts ten years from one that fails in two, it's preparation. The paint itself is only as good as the surface underneath it. Here's what proper exterior prep looks like and why it matters.
Cleaning comes first
Dirt, mould, chalking paint, and cobwebs all stop new paint from bonding properly. We pressure wash every exterior surface and treat any mould or mildew before going near a brush. Skipping this step is the number one reason paint peels.
Scrape, sand, and repair
Loose and flaking paint must be removed back to a sound edge. Cracked weatherboards, rotted timber, and damaged render need to be repaired or replaced before painting. We always sand back to create a key for the new coats and fill any holes or imperfections with the right filler for the substrate.
Prime the right way
Bare timber, raw render, metal flashings, and stain-prone areas all need the correct primer. A good primer seals the surface, blocks tannins and rust, and gives the topcoat something to grip to. Using one universal primer for everything is a shortcut that costs you years of finish life.
Protect what you're not painting
Masking windows, covering paths, gardens, and outdoor furniture, and removing or protecting fixtures is part of the job. It takes time, but it's the difference between a clean, professional finish and a messy one. When we quote an exterior, the prep is always built into the price.
